Scalability Test

Upgrade Time!

So the idea of the last upgrade was to ensure I had an easily scalable system, hard drives could be swapped out for larger ones when needed. Sadly, I didn't think it would only be 9 months till I was doing it, given the time between the first build and last upgrade was two years! I blame HDTV!

The first pool, sonic, went down to 1.05TB / 10.9. Not as desperate as last time but still something to worry about. shadow, on MKG had become stale data, unused. The two 4TB disks that made up shadow are set to replace 2 of the 3TB disks in sonic. Not a huge increase but an increase. Ideally, I'll whack another 2 4TB's in when the time soonish.

I had to delete 2.5TB of data from sonic to be able to remove the first 3TB diss Each of the disks was nearly full so DivePool hadn't the space to rebalence.. Everything was backed up on tails so no drama, however initially, the pulled disks from sonic were going to replace two disks in tails. During the build I decided it wasn't neccessary at this time. As I intended to break both pools, I backed up all media to spare 1TB and 2TB disks. I surface tested each disk as they're all quite old. 11/15 disks tested ok. It took 10 1TB disks, 1 2TB and a 500GB. Each disk was roughly 90/95% full.

Backup complete, reclaimed 4TB's in hand, first disk from sonic removed successfully overnight.3TB out 4TB in. Every time I make the same mistake. Correct order: Wipe the new drive, create a new NTFS partition, then the RDM, then present it to the guest. Rinse, repeat for the second drive.

  • surface test all spare 1TB & 2TB disks
  • backup all media to physical disk
  • remove 2.5TB data from pool-MKB-sonic
  • remove 2x 4TB disks from MKG
  • mark 3TB for removal
  • re-balence
  • add 4TB physical disk to MKV32
  • create RDM for 4TB disk
  • present to MKB
  • add 4TB disk to pool-MKB-sonic
  • re-balence
  • mark 3TB for removal
  • re-balence
  • add 4TB physical disk to MKV32
  • create RDM for 4TB disk
  • present to MKB
  • re-balence

Space increase 1.8TB. Looks like I can easily remove smaller drives and replace them with larger ones as hoped in the last upgrade. Awesome!
